The New Black
is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda.

The New Black takes viewers into the pews and onto the streets and provides a seat at the kitchen table as it tells the story of the historic fight to win marriage equality in Maryland and charts the evolution of this divisive issue within the black community.

As civil rights for LGBT and other minority groups are won violent backlashes have been known to increase. Today LGBT people are far more likely than any other minority group in the United States to be victimized by violent hate crimes.

PUZZLES: When Hate Came to Town tells the story of a hate crime in a gay bar when a teenager entered and brutally attacked its patrons.  As a result two different worlds collide, a homophobic hate crime offender and his victims. PUZZLES explores the correlation between American economic desperation, homophobia, intolerance, and, ultimately, violence.

PUZZLES is a deeply human exploration of the roots of hate violence and how a horrendous crime becomes a catalyst for a community to reach out for greater understanding and connection.
Barbara Abrash – NYU

MORE ABOUT ANDRES & OTD

Andrés Rivera is a Chilean activist based in Rancagua. He was a professor at the Universidad de Rancagua before co-founding Organización de Transexuales por la Dignidad de la Diversidad (OTD) in 2005. He was the first trans man in Chile to be awarded a Judicial Decree to change his name and legal gender. In 2008 he was awarded the IGLHRC Felipa de Souza Award based on his activism and leadership in Chile and the Latinamerica region. Andrés has represented OTD actively at the LGBTTTI coalition at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and is the Director of OTD.

OTD is an exceptionally strong organization that has managed to have large impact through its organizing approaches, including legal and policy advocacy, capacity building of members, arts and culture, historical international advocacy and mobilization of LGBTQI community in Chile. Last year OTD was part of the efforts that led to the passage of an anti-discrimination law in Chile that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories. Thanks to their tireless advocacy with the Ministry of Health they were also able to secure a Health Protocol for the respectful treatment of trans people. In addition, they are one of the main organizations that have carved the space for LGBTQI advocacy within the Inter-American system, and produced a CEDAW shadow report on the Human Rights situation of LBT women. This year they are working to pass a Gender Identity Law in Chile.
