Staff Accountant

As a member of the Finance team, the Staff Accountant is responsible for completing tasks assigned on the monthly checklist accurately and in a timely manner and complying with policies and procedures.

Job Purpose

As a member of the Finance team, the Staff Accountant is responsible for completing tasks assigned on the monthly checklist accurately and in a timely manner and complying with policies and procedures.  This full-time role is supervised by the Assistant Controller. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to:

  • Record Accounts Payable invoices, cash receipts, grant invoices, cash transfers, etc. to the accounting system as assigned in the monthly checklist.
  • Track and monitor cash flows at the grant level and assist Controller with cash flow projections.
  • Reconcile agency bank accounts.
  • Process payroll, record payroll entries to the accounting system including accruals, taxes, and benefits.
  • Create and post monthly journal entries according to responsibilities assigned on the monthly checklist.
  • Analyze and reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly as assigned on the monthly checklist including preparation of supporting schedules and account roll forwards.
  • Assist Controller in preparation for the annual financial statement audit and single audit and preparation of 990.
  • Prepare financial reports and other supporting schedules as assigned in the monthly checklist.
  • Serve as back-up for other Finance staff in the event of their absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Finance, Accounting or another equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated experience in a similar role.
  • This is a US based remote position with occasional time in the office in New York City
  • Hands-on experience using accounting software and experience using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and develop creative solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate a clear vision for social justice using a gender and racial justice lens.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and communicate with diverse audiences and multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality.
  • Passion for the Astraea Foundation’s mission as a public foundation queer feminist fund
  • Understanding and acceptance of the Astraea Foundation’s core values and guiding principles as a social justice funder

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a nonprofit, government or international environment including experience working with remote teams.
  • Comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, sex characteristics, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of issues facing domestic and global LGBTQI+, feminist and racial, economic and gender justice movements.

Compensation

The Astraea Foundation offers a competitive salary and benefits for this position, including resources for professional development. The annual compensation is $62,000 – $70,000USD.
