Development Officer, Individual Giving

The Individual Giving Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors and family foundations.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is the only philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LGBTQI+ human rights around the globe. We support brilliant and brave grantee partners in the U.S. and internationally who challenge oppression and seed change. The Astraea Foundation is the first grantmaker to hundreds of organizations; we play a catalytic role for LGBTQI+ groups worldwide – notably those led by lesbian, bisexual, and queer women, trans and gender-nonconforming people, intersex people, and people of color. Our grantmaking, capacity building, media and communications, and philanthropic advocacy programs support their work to build powerful justice movements. The Astraea Foundation has granted over $49 million to LGBTQI+ activists and artists in our 45-year history, a proud public foundation, and one of the world’s first queer feminist funds.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Individual Giving team sits within the Astraea Foundation’s Strategic Engagement department responsible for development and communications. The Development Officer, Individual Giving (IGO) is a vital contributor to our Individual Giving (IG) program. Reporting to the Associate Director, Individual Giving, the IGO is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors and family foundations. The IGO will create opportunities to expand the Astraea Foundation’s donor base, increase annual giving, and establish long-lasting philanthropic partnerships with donors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio Management & Donor Strategy

  • Manage an active and diverse portfolio of up to 150 donors who give over $1,000 annually.
  • Meet fundraising goals and deepen authentic relationships with donors.
  • Directly solicit gifts through individual, in-person, or virtual solicitation meetings.
  • Draft proposals and other materials to support fundraising efforts.
  • Contribute to moves management strategy development and overall fundraising strategy of the IG team.
  • Successfully steward donor relationships, managing appropriate frequency of outreach, communication, appreciation, and involvement.
  • Prepare unique engagement strategies tailored to donors’ interest and resources, leveraging organizational materials, campaigns, and activities.
  • Identify current donors with increased giving potential and collaborate with leadership on strategy to increase gifts.

Prospect Generation

  • Work closely with the development team to identify, engage, and cultivate a pipeline of prospects who can make annual investments at the $10,000+ level.
  • Cultivate and engage new individual prospects weekly.
  • Partner with the Development team to streamline prospect outreach utilizing existing resources (and identify new resources, as needed).
  • Identify and attend key opportunities to develop a pipeline of new prospects.

Donor Data Management

  • Maintain accurate records and donor information in CRM within 48 hours, tracking cultivation and stewardship activities as well as progress to goals.
  • Research and prep leadership for donor/prospect meetings.
  • Ensure existing and new donors are included in mailing lists and campaigns.
  • Regularly monitor progress and follow up to ensure timely collection of gifts.
  • Track engagement, follow up, and gift recognition.

Internal Coordination & Collaboration

  • Build and maintain deep knowledge of Astraea’s programming through relationships and collaboration with program staff.
  • Support writing projects, prospect research, and other relevant tasks across teams.
  • Collaborate with Engagement team on donor messaging and campaign execution.
  • Maintain knowledge of Astraea’s programmatic priorities.
  • Stay informed about current philanthropic trends and Community-Centric Fundraising principals to help inform team strategy.
  • Recommend new engagement opportunities and support implementation of best practices for current and future donors.

Additional Support

  • Work in close collaboration with Engagement team to support cross-team and cross-organizational project management, budget management, and annual projects.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum

  • A minimum of three (3) years of nonprofit/fundraising experience especially in areas of strategic interest to Astraea, such as organizations focusing on or part of LGBTQI+ or feminist issues, human rights, or gender, racial, migrant, or economic justice issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to manage a wide variety of internal and external relationships.
  • High standard of computer literacy and competence. Expertise in Microsoft 365 ecosystem specifically Word, Excel, and Dynamics.
  • Knowledge of prospecting, fundraising, and donor management software.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple and often competing deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to hold sensitive or confidential information with care.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others as part of a remote team.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time.
  • Ability to work efficiently, collaboratively, and flexibly as part of a diverse team in a global organization.
  • Passion for the Astraea Foundation’s mission as a public foundation and women’s fund.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the Astraea Foundation’s core values and guiding principles as a social justice funder.

Preferred

  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in social justice, human rights, development and/or philanthropic fields, experience with fundraising or part of a fundraising team.
  • Experience at a public foundation or women’s fund.
  • Comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, sex characteristics, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of issues facing domestic and global LGBTQI, feminist and racial, economic, and gender justice movements.

COMPENSATION

The Astraea Foundation offers a competitive salary and benefits for this position, including resources for professional development. The annual compensation is $80,000-$97,241 USD.
