Charone Talks About the Disability Justice Collective (DJC)

Astraea interviewed Charone, a member of the Disability Justice Collective (DJC) at the BOLD Gathering in Minneapolis in December 2011. Charone tells us about the Collective's work to bring organizing around disability to social justice spaces, people of color spaces and queer spaces. The Disability Justice Collective (DJC) is a newer organization funded by Astraea through the U.S. General Fund. Many LGBT organizations lack an understanding of disability justice, and many disability justice organizations do not operate out of a racial justice framework. The DJC works to remedy that. In 2011, the DJC hosted a Disability Justice National Convening in Detroit and trained a number of LGBT people of color organizations about the intersections of disability with other forms of structural oppression.
