Gowanus loft is steps away from the F/G train at Smith and 9th street station. Alternatively, it is a 10 minute walk from F/G/R at 4th Ave and 9th Street station. Free parking is available at the venue.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The layers subtle, intricate, dynamic vocals over acoustic instrumentation, skillfully re-imagining indigenous soul with signature ‘cool.’

Arooj has created a buzz both within the South Asian community and amongst a responsive and discerning public at large. The Boston Globe noted, “Aftab’s ethereal voice swirls and dives in the delicate, complicated motions of her country’s long musical heritage,” and MTV Desi reported, “Arooj filled the space with her gentle yet surprisingly forceful vocal style.”

Paying homage to legendary vocalists such as Begum Akhtar, Reshma, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, and Mehdi Hassan, Arooj works with contemporary artists, instruments and concepts to create a repertoire that translates across ages, for audiences South Asian and beyond. She has had the honor of sharing stage with world renowned musicians such as Nona Hendrix, Leni Stern, Liz Wright and Esperanza Spalding.
