New York, NY: On December 2, 2014, the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (Astraea) received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. The ratings, which are assessed annually, take into account organizational governance practices, fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

Of the 15 LGBTQI organizations given a four-star rating this year, Astraea received the highest score of any national LGBTQI organization, and ranked third in the overall list.

“We are thrilled to have once again been awarded Charity Navigator’s highest rating,” said Astraea Executive Director, J. Bob Alotta. “As a public foundation, Astraea raises and distributes millions of grant dollars each year. And as the first funder to hundreds of organizations, we play a catalytic role for innovative LGBTQI organizations across the globe.”

Since its founding in 1977, Astraea has awarded close to $25 million to more than 1,600 grantee partners in 84 countries and 45 states domestically. Earlier this year, Astraea launched Fueling the Frontlines, a comprehensive, three-year, $20 million campaign to expand global LGBTQI rights.

“For over 37 years, Astraea has stewadred our communities’ resources to fuel the frontlines of change for LGBTQI human rights,” Alotta said. “This rating is evidence of how seriously we take their investment in our work.”
