Intersex Trust Aotearoa New Zealand (ITANZ)

ITANZ was formed in 1996 by intersex activist Mani Mitchell to collaborate with health professionals to end shame, secrecy and unnecessary cosmetic surgeries.

ITANZ was formed in 1996 by intersex activist Mani Mitchell to collaborate with health professionals to end shame, secrecy and unnecessary cosmetic surgeries. ITANZ strives to ensure appropriate, respectful treatment and choices for all intersex persons, their families and loved ones, primarily through training for health professionals, community groups, schools, LGBTI groups, government agencies and political parties among others. ITANZ engages with the media to create visibility of the intersex experience and played a key role in the production the documentary film intersexion, which is often used as a training resource. The organization also supports intersex people and their families in the Aotearoa region and works alongside other LGBTQI organizations to increase the visibility of intersex and gender non-conforming peoples’ needs nationally and globally.
