Arts and Cultural Activism
Arts and cultural activism is a key tool for transforming social attitudes and cultivating acceptance of LGBTQI communities—it can seed new realities. Astraea supports progressive LGBTQI artists and organizations that use arts and culture as well as media as tools for social change.
Astraea supports and facilitates this work through grantmaking and through our pioneering Global Arts Fund. Our Global Arts Fund supports impactful art by LGBTQI people and organizations in the U.S. and the Global East and South that are using art as a tool for social transformation. The Fund’s 2013 focus was migration. This dynamic group of artists and collectives are exploring different kinds of migration and highlighting experiences of marginalization in the face of exploitations wrought by globalization and neocolonialism. Projects range from poetry to musical landscapes that trace past and present histories of migration, to documentary film and art installations that document the invisible and powerful stories of queer immigrants in the U.S. and around the world.
