Funding Queerly Giving Circle

Astraea is home to the Funding Queerly Giving Circle (FQ), one of the most successful LGBTQI donor circles in the country, giving out $150,000+ per year to grassroots community organizing groups across the United States. FQ is a group of young donors who believe that small-budget LGBTQI groups lack the funding resources they deserve to organize, build power and leadership, and make positive sustainable change. They recognize that even larger funding gaps persist for groups led by and for people of color, indigenous, low-income, and rural communities. Funding Queerly believes groups most affected by injustice and with the least access to financial resources are best positioned to make a positive impact on their own lives and wider social justice movements. Recognizing this opportunity, they were inspired to act. The members give personally, raise money, and mobilize resources for communities where the funds are most needed and best used.

Funding Queerly partners with the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice to allocate unrestricted funds to groups doing community-organizing work with people of color and other under-resourced communities. In its first three years, FQ granted $550,000+ to small-budget LGBTQI groups throughout the United States. In 2017, FQ is designating $100,000 or 50% of our funding, whichever is greater, to organizations that are by and for Black people and/or undocumented immigrant communities. We intentionally and explicitly pledge this support because we believe that liberation for Black and undocumented immigrant communities is essential to the liberation of all people.

Every year, Funding Queerly encourages people across the country to contribute to help make the yearly grantmaking possible. In 2016, close to 50 people donated, and 21 grants were made.
