ASTRAEA TURNED 30!

Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely rocked the house. Kate Clinton was
uproariously funny and incisive. And the words of courageous LGBTI
activists, FIERCE, Coalition of African Lesbians, and Marta Drury
inspired and challenged us. By all accounts, Astraea's 30th Anniversary

“Every
day, I make a decision to stay and be queer in the rural south.” So
says Paulina Hernandez, co-director of Southerners on New Ground
(SONG), the only LGBTQ multi-issue, multi-racial organization working
to dismantle systemic oppression throughout the Southeast. Paulina
echoes the sentiments of many of SONG’s members. Citing the
organization as source of inspiration and strength, they are determined
to stand their ground and stay in the homes they love. [read more and watch video]
 After
a rigorous selection process, reviewing work in mediums from nail
polish to welded steel, Astraea named Jess Dunn, Elaine Gan and amey
gee the awardees of the 2008 Astraea Visual Arts Fund. The Fund was
founded in 2002 to promote the work of contemporary lesbian visual
artists who show artistic merit and share Astraea's commitment to LGBTI
visibility and social justice. [view their work] 
Dr. Marjorie Hill, health professional, public policy advocate, and
current CEO of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), can’t remember how she
first heard about Astraea. “I also don’t remember the first time I met
my cousin,” she explains. “They’ve always been a part of my life. Like
family, Astraea has always been there.” [read more]
