Astraea's U.S. Emergency Fund is a rapid-response grantmaking mechanism, providing timely support for organizations to address urgent and strategic political opportunities and crises affecting LGBTI communities.

2 Spirit Press Room (Minneapolis, MN) is a Native LGBT Media Project. Grant supported travel for the leadership to coordinate meetings and strategy with other Two Spirit organizers at the 2005 National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's Creating Change conference in Oakland, CA. $2,000

Arab Women's Gathering Organizing Collective (Oakland, CA) organized AMWAJ (meaning 'wave' in Arabic), the first national gathering of Arab/Arab American women and girls in the U.S. $3,000

Audre Lorde Project's (Brooklyn, NY) newest community organizing area, TransJustice, mobilizes Trans and Gender Non-Conforming (GNC) communities of color and allies for justice around pressing issues facing Trans and GNC communities. Grant supported travel for members of TransJustice to attend the 2005 National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's Creating Change conference in Oakland, CA. $2,000

Center for Artistic Revolution (North Little Rock, AR) uses organizing and art to create social justice alliances with non-LGBTQ people, and to raise awareness within the LGBTQ movement on issues of racial, economic and environmental justice. Grant supports development of statewide social justice organizing strategy. $2,000

Committee on Women, Population and the Environment (Atlanta, GA) promotes the empowerment of women in a context of global peace and justice, and seeks to eliminate poverty, inequality, racism and environmental degradation. Grant supported a series of May 2006 sessions entitled: "Designer Genes: Genetic Technologies and the De-selection of Queer Bodies." The sessions sought to initiate dialogue about emerging reproductive and genetic technologies within LGBTQI communities, and to engage LGBTQI organizations in exploring strategies to advocate for ethics and accountability in the context of rapidly changing technology. $2,000

Desiree Alliance (Berkeley, CA) is a coalition of health professionals, academics, sex educators, sex professionals and supporting networks. The Alliance conducts unbiased research into sexual subcultures and develops policies relating to adult sexual health and behavior. Grant supports participation of lesbian, bisexual and transgender sex workers of color at their national grassroots leadership training conference, "Re-visioning Prostitution Policy: Creating Space for Sex Workers Rights and Challenging Criminalization." $2,000

MACHA Theatre Co. (Valley Village, CA) promotes Latina, women of color and lesbian performance and dramatic art works. Grant supports "Skin of Honey/Piel de Miel," a new play about two Cuban lesbian teenagers, set in the political upheaval of Castro's Cuba. $2,000

Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer (Washington, DC) provides direct services to lesbians with cancer, their families and caregivers. The Project educates policymakers about lesbians; promotes lesbian health issues and research; and empowers local grassroots groups and individuals to do the same. Grant supports launch of their first state-of-the-art lesbian health website. $2,000

National LGBT APA Roundtable (New York, NY) is a historic effort to build political unity and share resources amongst various LGBT Asian and Pacific American organizations across the U.S. Grant supported travel scholarships for queer women and transgender individuals to attend the Roundtable, which coincided with National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's 2005 Creating Change conference. $2,000

Purple Moon Dance Project (San Francisco, CA) promotes social change, peace and healing through the medium of dance. The Project provides artistic and community-based programs that increase the visibility of lesbians and women of color. Grant supports "Mahina," a piece about facing timeless challenges and responsibility, inspired by the Pacific Islander myth of Hina. $2,000

Queers for Economic Justice (New York, NY) fights for economic justice on behalf of poor and low-income LGBT people through advocacy, public education and grassroots organizing. Grant supports a strategy summit to reframe national LGBT marriage strategies. $2,000

San Francisco Dyke March (San Francisco, CA) builds community among dykes and women who support social justice and sexual freedom. Grant supports a cable car to transport disabled people and seniors at the annual Dyke March in San Francisco. $1,000

Tongues (a project of VIVA) (Los Angeles, CA) builds community and political involvement within and among queer, feminist, and women of color communities. $1,000

Women's Community Education Project (Portland, OR), founded in 1977 and now a leader in the adult literacy community, offers educational programs and vital support services to low-income women and families. Grant supports a national gathering of feminist bookwomen across the U.S. to re-establish a network after the closure of the Feminist Bookstore Network in 2000. $1,000

Your Family, Friends and Neighbors (Boise, ID) advances equality for LGBT people living in Idaho through advocacy, community education and leadership development. Grant supports hiring a membership coordinator to strengthen the progressive movement in Idaho in the face of upcoming anti-gay campaigns. $2,000
