Astraea's U.S. Emergency Fund is a rapid-response grantmaking mechanism, providing timely support for organizations to address urgent and strategic political opportunities and crises affecting LGBTI communities.

Affinity Community Services (Chicago, IL) promotes visibility, empowerment and community-building through support groups, social justice forums, and poetry nights by and for Black LBT women and youth.  Grant is for sponsorship of Fire & Ink: A Writers Festival for GLBT People of African Descent in September 2002.  $2,000

African Asian Latina Lesbians United (New Brunswick, NJ) addresses health, educational, political, economic, social, and emotional issues of African American lesbians.  This grant is for The 6th Annual Herstory Conference, held in February 2003.  $1,000

Audre Lorde Project (Brooklyn, NY) is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit and Transgender People of Color center for community organizing.  Through mobilization, education and capacity-building, it promotes community wellness as well as progressive, social and economic justice.  Grant is for the event, Celebrating 7 Years, honoring former Executive Director, Joo-Hyun Kang.  $2,000

B4T/Before Testosterone (Brooklyn, NY) is Imani Henry's smart, funny, and moving multi-media theatre piece exploring race, sexuality and gender expression through the lives of three Black, masculine, female-bodied people.  $1,000

Boulder County AIDS Project/LGBTI Health Summit (Boulder, CO) used this grant to provide scholarships for women of color, women with disabilities and limited-income women to attend the LGBTI Health Summit in August 2002. $2,000

Breakthrough T.V. (Jackson Heights, NY) is an international nonprofit organization using education and popular culture to promote public awareness and dialogue about human rights and social justice. Grant is for sponsorship of the world premiere of the video, Bringing Durban Home: Combating Racism Together. $500

Center for Anti-Violence Education (Brooklyn, NY) is a community-based nonprofit organization that works as a catalyst for change in the lives of women, teen women, children and other communities especially affected by violence. $2,000

Center for Community Change (Washington, DC) is committed to reducing poverty and rebuilding low-income communities by helping people develop the skills and resources they need to improve their communities. Grant is for an advertisement against war on Iraq.  $1,000

Center for Lesbian & Gay Studies/CUNY (New York, NY) is the first and only university-based research center in the United States dedicated to the study of historical, cultural and political issues of vital concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and communities.  Grant is for travel scholarships for the International Resource Network Conference.  $1,000

Chia-Chen Ni for Gender/Sexual Rights Association of Taiwan (Taipei, Taiwan) seeks educational, legal, political and social rights for sexual and gender minorities through grassroots organizing.  Grant is for honorarium and travel expenses to participate in the Creating Change Conference in Portland, Oregon during October, 2002.  $400

Dyke TV (Brooklyn, NY) promotes lesbian visibility through video and digital media workshops, public screenings, and an award-winning public access TV magazine, all with an emphasis on producing positive, realistic and truthful images of lesbian lives.  Grant is for Sponsorship of Dyke TV's 10th Annual Gala.  $1,000

East End Gay Organization/Linda Leibman Human Rights Fund (Bridgehampton, NY) is leading the fight for lesbian and gay rights in Eastern Long Island, NY.  Grant is for Sponsorship of their 25th Anniversary event in August 2002. $1,000

Hand on the Pulse/Women Make Movies (New York, NY) is a video documentary about Joan Nestle, a working class "femme" lesbian and Co-Founder of The Lesbian Herstory Archives.  Grant is for distribution.  $1,000

Herland Sister Resources (Oklahoma City, OK) is a lesbian advocacy organization that generates newsletters, operates a bookstore, sponsors educational and cultural events, and supports the Herland Legal Defense Fund for cases involving lesbian issues.  $1,000

LGBT Caucus of the National Coalition Building Institute (New York, NY) provides coalition building skills and leadership development to LGBT leaders. This grant provided training scholarships to primarily lesbian activists from multi-racial LGBT groups with budgets under $500,000.  $1,500

LLEGO the National Latino/a LGBT Organization (Washington DC) is the only national nonprofit organization devoted to representing Latina/o LGBT communities.  LLEGO addresses an array of social concerns ranging from civil rights and social justice to health and human services.  Grant is for the sponsorship of their 9no. Encuentro y 3er. Congreso Internacional, in Miami during October, 2002. $1,000

Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center (Los Angeles, CA) offers the widest array of services available to gay men and lesbians anywhere in the world.  Grant is for sponsorship of Women's Night.  $500

Lyon-Martin Women's Health Services (San Francisco, CA) provides affordable, comprehensive health care and health education for women, by women.  Grant is for sponsorship of the 2nd Annual Bar-be-que By The Bay.  $500

Mahina Movement/Fractured Atlas (New York, NY) is an emerging artists' collective that produces theatre committed to provoking new ways of experiencing art, politics and life. Grant is for sponsorship of the performance, Our Tongue In You.   $250

Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer (Washington, D.C.) provides direct services to lesbians with cancer, their families and caregivers.  They educate policymakers about lesbians; promote lesbian health issues and research; and empower local grassroots groups and individuals to do the same. Grant is for sign language interpretation for their Healing Works Conference, in September 2002.  $1,000

Metropolitan Community Foundation (San Francisco, CA) builds coalitions with other local, state and national organizations in order to eliminate barriers of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, gender identity and economic status.  Grant is for Circles of Hope 2002: A Tribute to Coretta Scott King.  $500

National Center for Lesbian Rights (San Francisco, CA) advances the rights of lesbians and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, free legal counseling and public education. Grant is for Sponsorship of NCLR's 26th Anniversary Gala.  $1,000

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (Washington, DC) is the national progressive organization working for the civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, with the vision and commitment to building a powerful political movement.  Grant is for Sponsorship of their 30th Anniversary Kick-off Celebration.  $750

OUTFEST: The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (Los Angeles, CA) builds bridges among audiences, filmmakers and the entertainment industry through the exhibition of high-quality LGBT-themed films and videos.  Grant is for sponsorship of Lesbian Film Month and Outfest 2003.  $2,500

Performance Space 122 (New York, NY), a nonprofit arts center serving the New York City dance and performance community, is committed to supporting individual artists who create live art with an authentic vision. This grant sponsored "Single Wet Female," a performance by Marga Gomez and Carmelita Tropicana.  $500

Senior Action in a Gay Environment/SAGE (New York, NY) is an intergenerational and culturally diverse organization dedicated to meeting the unique needs of older lesbians and gay men. Grant is for their Seventh Annual Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2002.  $500

Tango Lesbiango (Bronx, NY) is Argentinean lesbian Susana Cook's performance-art cablecast of original work which aired on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network Public Access Cable Television.  $2,000

Wind River Country Initiative for Youth (Cheyenne, WY) used this grant to pay for Yolanda Hvizdak, a Native lesbian activist, to attend the Creating Change Conference in Portland during November 2002.  $550
