Grants

Astraea’s Donor-Advised Fund program enables donors to establish a fund at Astraea through which they may recommend specific organizations or projects for support. Astraea staff also work with donors to identify organizations in need of support whose work matches the interests of the donor.

Ishta Retreat Travel Fund (Oakland, CA) paid for travel to the Ishta Retreat for Queer Arab women.  $350

ACLU Foundation (New York, NY) runs the Lesbian and Gay Rights Project, which advocates placing LGBT rights within the larger context of securing equal rights and civil liberties for all.  $1,000

Audre Lorde Project (Brooklyn, NY) is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit and Transgender People of Color center for community organizing.  Through mobilization, education and capacity-building, it promotes community wellness as well as progressive, social and economic justice.  Grant is in honor of Betty Powell.  $500

Changemakers Project (Ross, CA) is a national foundation dedicated to transforming the values and practice of philanthropy in order to assure a more equitable and accountable distribution of resources for creating positive social change.  $1,000

COLAGE/Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere (San Francisco, CA) is the only national and international organization in the world specifically supporting young people who have gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender parents.  $500

Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (San Francisco, CA) is the leading advocate and authority for lesbian and gay health issues.  They work closely with government officials, community groups, the health care industry and LGBT organizations to advance the medical needs of the community. $1,000

GenderPAC (Washington, DC) works to end discrimination and violence caused by gender stereotypes by changing public attitudes, educating elected officials and expanding legal rights.  $500

Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (Boston, MA) is a public interest legal organization whose mission is to gain full equality and justice for New England's LGBT and HIV/AIDS-affected communities.   $500

Global Fund for Women (San Francisco, CA) is an international network of women and men advocating for and defending women's human rights by making grants to women's groups around the world. $1,000

GLSEN: Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (New York, NY) combats harassment and discrimination against LGBT students and school personnel in order to end anti-gay bias in K-12 schools.  $500

Horizons Foundation (San Francisco, CA) serves the LGBT community by making grants, strengthen-ing leadership, and increasing philanthropic giving. $500

Intersex Society of North America (Petaluma, CA) is a lesbian-led organization advoating for change in policies regarding the medical and social management of Intersex children-children born with anatomy or physiology which differs from cultural ideals of male and female.  Grant is in honor of Cheryl Chase.  $500

Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund (New York, NY) is committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men and people with HIV/AIDS through impact litigation, education, and public policy work.  $1,000

Mid-Peninsula YWCA (Palo Alto, CA) runs the Outlet program, the only program of its kind in the Mid-Peninsula working to empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth in developing and affirming their identities.  $500

National Center for Lesbian Rights (San Francisco, CA) advances the rights of lesbians and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, free legal counseling, and public education. $5,000

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (Washington, DC) is the national progressive organization working for the civil rights of LGBT people, with the vision and commitment to building a powerful political movement. $2,500

San Francisco Women's Centers/The Women's Building (San Francisco, CA) provides women and girls with the tools and resources needed to achieve full and equal participation in society.  Grant is for general support, in honor of Marta Drury.  $500

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (Washington, DC) offers legal advice and assistance to LGBT service members under investigation or otherwise harmed by the U.S. military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.  $500

South Africa Development Fund (Boston, MA) works in partnership with community-based organizations to provide financial and technical support to communities disadvantaged as the result of decades of apartheid policies. $500

South Africa Partners (Boston, MA) supports those efforts that promote South Africa's equitable and sustainable development while building bridges between the United States and South Africa.  $500

Southern Partners Fund (Atlanta, GA) serves Southern communities and social justice organizations by providing financial resources, technical assistance and training.  $2,500

Third Wave Foundation (New York, NY) provides resources to support the cutting-edge work of young women activists through grantmaking, public education campaigns and networking programs.  $500

WomanVision (San Francisco, CA) was founded in 1993 to promote tolerance and equal treatment of all people through the production and use of educational media, including film and video. Grant is for the film No Secret Anymore: The Times of Del Martin & Phyllis Lyon. $2,500

Women's Initiative for Self Employment (San Francisco, CA) provides workshops, technical assistance and loans to help low-income women launch their own businesses.  Grant is for general support, in honor of Paulette Meyer.  $500


Heller/Bernard Fund


 

Mautner Project (Washington, D.C.) provides direct services to lesbians with cancer, their families and caregivers.  They educate policy makers about lesbians; promote lesbian health issues and research; and empower local grassroots groups and individuals to do the same. $3,000

Old Lesbians Organizing For Change (Houston, TX) confronts and fights ageism in lesbian lives, communities, organizations and society as a whole.  $2,000

Paris Press (Ashfield, MA) publishes fine feminist literary works of all genres ranging from experimental to politically radical, including work by worthy yet neglected writers.  $1,000

Rainbow Project (Windhoek, Namibia) works for the recognition and promotion of equal human rights for LGBT people in Namibia. $2,000

Southerners On New Ground (Durham, NC) helps build the progressive movement by integrating work against racism, sexism and economic justice into LGBT organizing, and integrating the struggle against homophobia into the broader freedom struggles in the South. $2,000

Loving Lesbians Fund


 

Corazones Unidas (Santa Fe, NM) is a growing network of HIV infected women-often poor and single mothers-and their children. Corazones provides emotional support and emergency financial assistance.  Grant is for support of the organization during its Executive Director transition.  $20,000

Mana del Norte (Santa Fe, NM) serves as a voice and resource for Latinas in the tri-county area of Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Grant is for scholarships to assist Hispanic women in continuing and/or completing their post-secondary education.  $5,000

We'Mooniversity (Estacada, OR) models sustainable ways of living close to the earth and provides a place of healing and retreat for women and girls.  Grant is for the Building Fund.  $3,000

Coalition on Homelessness San Francisco (San Francisco, CA) garners the participation of poor people to design and critique public policy and nonprofit services in an effort to find permanent solutions to poverty. $1,000

Funding Exchange (New York, NY) is a network of progressive grassroots groups whose work challenges and alters existing economic and social relationships and institutions which are inequitable and undemocratic.  Grant is for the Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media and the Saguaro Fund.  $1,500

Global Fund for Women (San Francisco, CA) is an international network of women and men advocating for and defending women's human rights by making grants to support women's groups around the world. $1,500

Global Greengrants Fund (Boulder, CO) supports grassroots groups working for environmental justice and sustainability around the world.  $1,500

Third Wave Foundation (New York, NY) provides resources to support the cutting-edge work of young women activists through grantmaking, public education campaigns, and networking programs.  $1,000

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation/GLAAD (Los Angeles, CA) is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.  $500

Spectrum Center (San Anselmo, CA) strengthens, mobilizes, and serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning people, and promotes acceptance, understanding and full inclusion in Marin County.  Grant is for Rainbow's End, a facilitated social and support group for LGBT, and questioning youth ages 14-19. $1,000

That All May Freely Serve (Rochester, NY) strives to open barriers in order to permit LGBT people to serve openly as clergy, elders and deacons within the denomination.  $1,000


Roots & Wings Fund


BRIDGES: A Journal for Jewish Feminists and Our Friends (Ann Arbor, MI) celebrates and illustrates Jewish women's identity and social justice activism with articles by and about lesbians, working-class Jews, Jewish women of varied ethnic backgrounds, and reports on Israeli women peace workers.  $500

Children's Music Network (Evanston, IL) supports the creation and dissemination of life-affirming, multicultural musical forms for, by, and with young people.  $1,000

National Center for Lesbian Rights (San Francisco, CA) advances the rights of lesbians and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, free legal counseling, and public education.  $2,000

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center (New York, NY) provides a home for the birth, nurture and celebration of LGBT organizations, institutions and culture in New York City.  The Center offers community care, education and advocacy, and empowers LGBT individuals and groups to achieve their fullest potential.  $1,500
