Fundación Causana is best known in Ecuador as a powerful LGBT human-rights organization. Causana works hard to combat forced hospitalization of lesbians in “rehabilitation” clinics and to design LGBT human-rights trainings for government agencies. Recently, Causana built new alliances with grassroots groups, women’s organizations and local and international partners. They succeeded in persuading officials to incorporate protections for LGBT citizens into the country’s new constitution. The alliance is now using its collective power to protect the rights of other marginalized citizens, including indigenous people, the disabled community and Afrodescendants.
