When private developers in New York City attempted to gentrify a pier in the West Village, FIERCE, an Astraea grantee partner serving queer youth of color, harnessed the power of diverse communities working together. FIERCE collaborated with soccer moms, business owners, advocates and politicians. This unlikely band of allies soundly defeated a conglomerate whose plans would have limited access to public space, cut jobs and destroyed a safe haven for LGBTQ youth of color. FIERCE has since become an effective policy advocate and opinion leader known for gaining solid ground by forging broad coalitions.
