International Grants Program

ASTRAEA’S INTERNATIONAL GRANTS PROGRAM Astraea's International Fund for Sexual Minorities was established in 1996, the first institutional fund in the U.S. devoted to supporting LBGTI organizations worldwide.  Since its inception, the Fund has invested in innovative LGBTI-led human rights and social change organizations and projects in over 70 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Eastern Europe/Commonwealth of Independent States and the Middle East.

In fiscal year 2011, Astraea’s International Program awarded $725,322 to 55 groups across 45 cities in 36 countries.

INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR SEXUAL MINORITIES – ANNUAL GRANTS PROGRAM
International Fund Grants are granted to innovative LGBTI-led human rights and social change organizations and projects across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Eastern Europe/Commonwealth of Independent States and the Middle East. An International Advisory Board, comprised primarily of activists living and organizing in the regions we fund, provides significant input and guidance in our grants process.

SOCIAL CHANGE OPPORTUNITY FUND
The Social Change Opportunity Fund provides multi-year support to LGBTI organizations with impressive track records conducting timely social change work in their countries. Grants support projects promoting institutional and policy change. Applications are solicited from past recipients of Astraea’s International Fund Panel Grants.

INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY FUND
Astraea’s International Emergency Fund is a rapid-response grantmaking mechanism that provides support for organizations to address urgent and strategic political opportunities and crises affecting LGBTI communities. Grants impacted by grantee safety concerns are omitted from the listings.

INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT RESOURCE FUND
Astraea’s Movement Resource Fund provides grants to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of LGBTI organizations engaging in movement-building work. Grants are generally provided in four areas: Technical Assistance, Travel and Peer-to-Peer Learning, Historic Convenings and Miscellaneous Movement-Building Infrastructure. Grantees of Astraea’s International Fund Panel are prioritized.

CONSORTIUM OF LATIN AMERICAN WOMEN’S FUNDS LBT PROJECT
The Consortium of Latin American Women’s Funds LBT Project is a two-year regional collaboration of six Latin American Women’s Funds and Astraea. Astraea makes grants, convenes grantees and provides other support focused in Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Peru.

INTERNATIONAL LGBTQQ YOUTH FUND
The International LGBTQQ Youth Fund was established by three donors working in partnership with Astraea. The Fund makes grants to grassroots organizations working to improve the quality of life among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth 25 years old and younger. The Fund awards grants to innovative and effective leadership development and organizing projects and provides general support to organizations that empower LGBTQQ youth to improve societal conditions affecting their lives.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE FUND
International Collaborative Fund grants are issued to organizations with whom we work in partnership.

INTERNATIONAL PHILANTHROPIC FUND
International Philanthropic Fund grants are issued to philanthropic entities with whom we work in partnership.

INTERNATIONAL DONOR-ADVISED GRANTS
Astraea’s Donor-Advised Grants program enables donors to establish a fund at Astraea through which they may recommend specific organizations or projects for support. Astraea staff also works with donors to identify organizations in need of support whose work matches the interests of the donor.
