Astraea Mourns the Murder
of Fannyann Eddy
Lesbian Activist was Founder of Sierra Leone
Lesbian & Gay Association

NEW YORK, NY, October 6, 2004—Today, the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice mourns the tragic death of Fannyann Eddy, an outspoken lesbian activist and leader of the Sierra Leone Lesbian and Gay Association. According to reports, Fannyann was brutally murdered late last week by assailants who broke into the office of SLLAGA in Freetown while she was working alone in the evening. Fannyann was 30 years old and she leaves a nine-year-old son. An investigation has been launched and continues to proceed.

Katherine Acey, Astraea's Executive Director, issued the following statement:

"A source of light and life for colleagues and activists around the world, Fannyann's conviction and passion for justice will be sorely missed. Each day, she bravely stood out and served as a voice for those who had none, and for those whose lives were dictated by fear and homophobia.

Our work at Astraea puts us in contact with many outspoken and courageous activists whose work links LGBTI, sexual, racial, gender and economic rights. This horrific murder of an African lesbian activist drives home the fact that many of these women and men work in isolation, and that speaking the truth often places them in harm's way. It reminds us to be ever vigilant for the safety of those we work with and those whom we love. We know there are many more women like Fannyann—brave, true and dedicated activists—who need the support of a global movement.

So now, as we mourn another senseless act of violence, it is our duty to press on, and work for a day when no one will be afraid to be who they are and love who they love. It is what Fannyann would have done. May her memory be a blessing and a source of strength for those who continue to work for LGBTI justice around the world."
