Lynn Campbell 1955-1984
Lynn Campbell was that rare blend of vibrant spirit and an accomplished human rights activist. Astraea is proud to honor her memory with the Lynn Campbell Memorial Fund, a source of funding that distributes grants to groups reflecting her leadership and activism.
Lynn began her work at age 17 with United Farm Workers (UFW) and went on to become the director of the California boycott and the "Yes on Proposition 14" campaign. In the late 70's, she worked for Women Against Violence in Pornography and Media, and played a key role in organizing the first conference on women and pornography and the first "Take Back the Night" march.
In 1979, Lynn brought her passion and experience to New York City to coordinate Women Against Pornography (WAP). In 1980, she left WAP to serve as Assistant Director of the National Committee on Household Employment for the National Urban League.
As a filmmaker Lynn served as Associate Producer of Greetings from Washington, D.C., a documentary of the 1979 Gay and Lesbian March on Washington. She also served as an Executive Producer/Co Producer of Rate It X. From 1981 until her illness, she was the Program Coordinator at the Funding Exchange and co-founded Funders for Lesbian & Gay Issues.
In honor of her leadership, Lynn was named by Ms. Magazine as one of its "Eighty Women to Watch in the 80's." Lynn was also honored—along with such courageous women as Rosa Parks, Sister Theresa Kane, Sonia Johnson, Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem—by the Women's Art Association with a Women of Courage Award.
Astraea's Community Funding Panel annually designates grants from the Lynn Campbell Memorial Fund to assure that those organizations who embody her spirit, courage and leadership can continue in her footsteps.
