OPEN POSITION: DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS (Full-time position)

ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:
The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice works for social, racial and economic justice in the U.S. and internationally. Our grantmaking, capacity-building and philanthropic advocacy programs promote and support the work of Lesbian, Trans and LGBTI social change organizations in the U.S., Africa, Asia/Pacific, the Caribbean, Latin America, Eastern Europe/Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Middle East. We also support individual artists through the Lesbian Writers Fund and the Astraea Visual Arts Fund.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Development, Coordination and Evaluation
- Lead grants team members to coordinate programs that advance Astraea's mission, goals and strategic priorities
- Manage development of annual operational plans for grants team, in alignment with organizational strategic plan
- Lead grants team in reviewing, developing and revising program initiatives
- Design and implement philanthropic advocacy and other activities to increase financial resources to Astraea grantees and priority communities
- Design and implement convenings, technical assistance referrals, and other programmatic strategies to promote and support the increased effectiveness of Astraea grantees
- Work closely with development and executive teams to ensure coordination of donor advised fund grantmaking, and grantmaking through fiscal sponsored projects
- Oversee multi-year grantmaking efforts
- Design and implement program evaluation framework, and ensure regular evaluation of program impact
- Lead and coordinate Astraea's networking with other donors, foundations, LGBTI and other relevant organizations to develop grantmaking and programmatic partnerships and collaborations
Management
- Coordinate recruitment, training, supervision, and leadership development of grants team members
- Manage grants team budget development, modifications and monitoring
- Participate actively in overall management of Astraea, as part of management team and represent grants team perspectives within the organization
- Work closely with management team to ensure compliance of grants team with legal standards and mandates
- Coordinate and present grants team reports to the Board of Directors
Fundraising, Communications & Philanthropic Advocacy
- Coordinate grants team participation in organizational fundraising and communications priorities and activities
- Work closely with the Director of Development to identify new and emerging opportunities for resources supporting grantmaking and related activities
- Participate actively in securing and retaining resources supporting the grants program and the organization
- Work closely with the Director of Communications to develop communications strategies and materials that highlight the work of Astraea and grantees
- Represent the organization in key philanthropic networks, alliances, public speaking engagements, and other relevant settings to promote philanthropic advocacy and other strategic goals
QUALIFICATIONS
- Extensive knowledge and experience of issues and trends facing Lesbian, Trans and LGBTI organizations in the US and globally (particularly in regions that Astraea provides funding); and knowledge of existing resources for these communities
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to Lesbian, Trans, LGBTI and social change organizing that integrates racial, gender, social, and economic justice. Experience working in social change/community organizing preferred
- Minimum 7 years experience leading design, management and evaluation of strategic programs
- Minimum 7 years management, fiscal and supervision experience
- Highly organized, with proven ability to work independently and build teams
- Excellent facilitator and communicator, with extensive public speaking and work experience with diverse audiences
- Experience and demonstrated track record as a fundraiser
- Excellent written and analytical skills, with demonstrated track record in developing creative solutions with limited resources
- Knowledge and experience in philanthropy and grantmaking, including activist-advised grantmaking preferred
- English proficiency required, fluency in a second language related to grantmaking desired (Spanish a plus)
- Enthusiasm and ability to travel within US and internationally
Reports to: Deputy Director
